The closing ceremony of the International Short Course “The REx (The Research Experience): Roots to Reefs” was successfully held on January 9th, 2025, marking the end of a fruitful 10-day program organized by the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Marine Science Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Mataram (UNRAM). This innovative program, running from December 31st, 2024, to January 9th, 2025, brought together students and experts to deepen their understanding of mangrove and coastal ecosystems.

The event featured a keynote presentation by Dr. Gretchen C. Coffman, a senior lecturer from NUS, titled “Rebuilding Coastal Resilience: Innovations and Insights in Mangrove Restoration.” Dr. Coffman shared cutting-edge strategies and research findings on mangrove restoration, emphasizing the importance of coastal resilience in the face of climate change.

With more than 10 participants, this program offered an immersive learning experience through a series of hands-on activities, such as mangrove exploration, drone mapping, mangrove nurseries, and planting. Participants also analyzed the critical connections between mangroves, seagrasses, and coral reefs.

In addition to academic and research-focused activities, the program provided opportunities for cultural exchange and recreation. Students enjoyed coral reef snorkeling, turtle sanctuary visits, mariculture, fun games, and cultural activities that strengthened the bonds between Indonesian and Singaporean participants.

The International Short Course “The REx: Roots to Reefs” has successfully fostered collaboration and knowledge-sharing between NUS and UNRAM, inspiring participants to continue their contributions to coastal and marine ecosystem conservation. This initiative underscores the commitment of both universities to addressing global environmental challenges through education and innovation.
