On November 13, 2024, the University of Mataram (UNRAM) collaborated with the Institut Agama Hindu Negeri (IAHN) Gde Pudja Mataram to facilitate a cultural exchange as part of the inbound student mobility program. The event, held at IAHN Gde Pudja Mataram, involved Mr. Li Yang, Director of Student Affairs, Ms. Yu Chunying, Staff of International affairs, 10 students from Shangrao Normal University and focused on learning about Balinese traditional culture and arts.
The visiting Shangrao Normal University students were warmly greeted by a Pendet dance performance, accompanied by the sounds of gamelan music. The performance was presented by students from IAHN Gde Pudja Mataram’s Dance and Gamelan Student Activity Units (UKM). This lively cultural display marked the beginning of their immersive experience in Balinese arts.
Prof. Dr. I Wayan Wirata, Rector of IAHN Gde Pudja Mataram, welcomed the students and emphasized the importance of preserving and promoting Bali’s rich traditional culture. He provided an introduction to Gamelan Gong Kebyar and its role in Balinese music, followed by a coaching clinic where the visiting students had the chance to learn how to play gamelan instruments.
Dr. I Ketut Supartha, S.Sn., M.Si., the head of the organizing committee, also explained the cultural significance of Gamelan Gong Kebyar and guided the students through a practical session to further deepen their understanding of this Balinese musical tradition.
The visit concluded with a tour of the IAHN Gde Pudja Mataram campus, where the students explored the university’s facilities and gained insight into its academic offerings. This cultural exchange program not only strengthened international ties but also enhanced the students’ appreciation of Balinese culture and traditional arts.
As this fruitful collaboration continues, UNRAM, IAHN Gde Pudja Mataram, and Shangrao Normal University hope to further strengthen their partnership in the future, with more opportunities for cross-cultural exchange and academic cooperation.
